IPAC Specification Handbook updated with new ACEA sequences

The IPAC Specification Handbook has been updated with the latest ACEA sequences - The ACEA 2016 European Oil Sequences. These sequences define the minimum quality level of a product for presentation to ACEA members.

These replace the ACEA 2012 sequences beginning in December 2016. They become mandatory for new claims as of December 1, 2017; however, the 2012 Sequences can also be claimed until December 2018.

In addition to updating the specification tables in the handbook, new charts which clarify the fundamental differences between the different sequences (i.e., E4, E6, E7 and E9) have been added.

Regarding the new 2016 Sequences in general, the revised A/B categories are identified now as "High SAPS", and the C Sequences as "Low SAPS", SAPS of course referring to Sulfated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulfur. Previously they were delineated by the presence of emission control devices.

Interestingly, A1/B1 was dropped; however, the only oils that would likely be affected would be the xW-20 types; however, such oils are almost certainly to be called for in vehicles with emission controls, thus would be covered by the new C5 category.

This C5 category has a mid level SAPS but requires a very low HTHS range of 2.6 to 2.9 mPa*s. Importantly, the fuel economy requirement, via the M111 test, is significantly higher than some of the other C Sequences by requiring a 3% fuel economy improvement. It is essentially a higher (mid) SAPS version of C1, which is extremely low SAPS (actually requires a phosphorus max of 500 ppm, versus C5 which allows for 700 - 900 ppm).

Changes to the E Sequences were relatively mild, compared to changes to A/B and C. There are some significant proposed changes for the E Sequences on the horizon, including perhaps E6 and E9 being renamed E8 and E11, and with corresponding low HTHS versions called F8 and F11. These updates may occur in 2018.
